When I began writing my art annotation for this class, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had never really written about art or had much formal art education. So, I approached the assignment with curiosity. What would I be able to uncover about art through writing? But as I began to spend more time with artists and their work, I realized how much of myself and my own reflections I could find in the artwork. Mediating on each image allowed me the time and space to experiment and reflect about my own learning and experiences separated from any competition of a well-formed and thought gate keeping structure – which in and of itself produced feelings of liberation. Despite many of these yet publicly unknown signs of the apocalypse playing at the back of my head for the duration of the semester, this art annotation was one of the assignments I enjoyed most. One that allowed me to be openly reflective, to approach artwork with my own thoughts and to see how my thinking about certain pieces would evolve as we studied them. In that process, I’ve appreciated learning about new artists – creative beings whose work promotes meaningful interaction and reflection and produces emotions of joy, sadness, appreciation, and excitement. Over the course of the semester, taking the time to understand what emotions each image stirs up in me and what, out of the several possible emotions the artist was trying to evoke, initially caught my attention continues to push me to focus on more minute details and appreciate the artist’s work more fully.
As the course progressed, I increasingly anticipated the art annotations every week. They allowed me to interpret famous artworks in my personal way and strengthened my bond with the course. Not only did it allow me to interpret and enjoy art in a different light, it also helped my perceived closeness and affection for art in general.The texts we read during the course redefined the way that I experienced and interpreted art. Before, I believed that literature and visual art were separate hobbies, rather than fused together. Art and literature have the potential to complement each other and encourage richer engagement in one another. Regardless of the century or medium, art and literature are perpetually interdependent. Almost everything we do comes in contact with art and visual language.
Overall,this course has given me a new perspective to re-examine art works and annotate them. I am also able to resonate with art works based on pictures from my own life. This journey provides a unique way for me to adapt to future learning and life.
